The Junior Amabile Singers was founded in 1989 to give young women between the ages of 9-16 an opportunity to develop an understanding of choral music, self-discipline and artistic expression. As one of seven choirs in The Amabile Organization of London Ontario Canada, it has evolved from its original purpose of being a training choir for the Amabile Youth Singers into a disciplined children's chorus of its own renown. Under the direction of Jacquelyn Norman and Wendy Gee, the Junior Amabile Singers perform regularly in the London area and Southwestern Ontario in addition to seeking national and international performance opportunities.
The 1999-2000 season was a particularly exciting year for the choir as it established itself on the international stage by winning a gold medal at the first international Choir Olympics in Linz Austria. Out of 62 choirs in its category, The Junior Amabile Singers placed fifth overall, bringing home one of the eight gold medals awarded.
The choir has also participated in other international choral experiences as well. In 1996-7 it performed and competed in the Llangollen Music Eisteddfod in Wales placing seventh out of twenty-seven choirs from around the world and in 1994-1995 it participated in the Des Moines International Children's Festival where it distinguished itself as the only North American choir chosen to sing in the Best of Choirs competition.
In previous seasons, the Junior Amabile Singers have competed in the prestigious CBC's National Choral Competition progressing to the National finals in the 1996 competition and placing second in the 1998 competition. Also to its credit, the choir released its first CD, "Canadian Portraits" in the 1998-1999 season.
DA CAPO CHOIR
The Da Capo Choir is a recently formed ensemble of young ladies (of the JAYS) and young gentlemen (of the ABCs) between the ages of 8 - 12. The aims of the Da Capo are to provide a choir venue for more young choristers and to serve as training choir for the Junior Amabile and the Amabile Treble Choir. These choristers meet weekly for instruction in vocal production, sight singing, ear training, basic rudiments and choral performance discipline.
